Coruss bow hair technology
It started with a simple observation.
“Over 30 years of performing on every continent, in all kinds of venues and with constant travel, I was often affected by the way natural horsehair reacts to changes in humidity.
When the hair has absorbed so much moisture that you can no longer tighten the bow properly, it becomes a real problem for playing.”
– Renaud Gruss, Toulouse Chamber Orchestra
After years of working with bows, we noticed increasing variations in the quality of natural horsehair.
To understand why, we travelled to Mongolia, one of the main sources of bow hair. Discussions with local horse breeders highlighted changes in climate and growing worldwide demand, while some processing methods, including chemical bleaching, can also weaken natural hair.
Rather than accepting these variations, we decided to look for another solution.
Developed with musicians and luthiers.
Creating a new bow hair was not simply about finding a stronger fibre. It had to feel natural under the bow and provide the grip, flexibility and response musicians expect.
For nearly three years, Coruss bow hair was researched, tested and refined with professional musicians from the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra and experienced luthiers. Their feedback helped us develop a fibre designed for real playing conditions.
“Nobody suspected for a moment that I wasn’t using a natural horsehair bow.”
– Renaud Gruss, Toulouse Chamber Orchestra
A new generation of bow hair.
Coruss bow hair was developed as a modern alternative to traditional horsehair for violin, viola, cello and double bass bows.
Consistent grip
Coruss Bow Hair provides reliable contact with the string and a predictable response, helping musicians maintain a familiar playing feel from one session to the next.
Humidity-stable
Coruss bow hair is resistant to changing atmospheric conditions, helping maintain a more consistent tension in both dry and humid environments.
Long-lasting
Its highly resistant fibre is designed for extended use, reducing hair breakage and the need for frequent bow rehairs.
From the concert hall to the outdoor stage.
Humidity can have a significant effect on traditional horsehair. In damp conditions it absorbs moisture and lengthens, while dry air can cause it to contract.
Coruss bow hair was designed to remain stable through these changes, making it particularly suitable for touring musicians, outdoor performances and players moving between different climates.
“The weather may change.
Your bow hair should remain dependable.”
Without animal-derived materials.
Our bows are designed without animal-derived materials, from the Coruss bow hair to the other traditional components that can normally come from animals.
Coruss Bow Hair remains at the heart of this approach, providing a reliable technical alternative to traditional horsehair.
Performance in colour!
Coruss Bow Hair is available in 10 colours, from traditional white and black to brighter shades designed to give the bow a more personal identity.
Whichever colour you choose, the objective remains the same: consistent grip, durability and reliable performance.
Bow hair and rosin, designed together.
Because Coruss Bow Hair has its own characteristics, we developed Coruss rosin specifically to complement it.
After extensive testing, the formulation was designed to provide the grip required by Coruss bow hair while keeping application simple.
A small amount is enough.
Apply progressively, test the bow and add more only when necessary.
